Foi a primeira mulher afro-americana a receber o Prémio Nobel da Literatura: a escritora americana Toni Morrison faleceu no dia 5 de Agosto, no Montefiore Medical Center, em Nova Iorque, na sequência de uma pneumonia — contava 88 anos.
De seu nome Chloe Ardelia Wofford, é autora de uma obra imensa, desde o primeiro romance, The Bluest Eye (1970), focada na história dos negros no interior da história mais geral dos EUA, em particular nos processos de afirmação identitária face às manifestações do racismo. Entre os seus títulos mais conhecidos incluem-se Song of Solomon (1977), Beloved (1987), Jazz (1992), Love (2003) e Home (2012).
Distinguido com o Pulitzer, Beloved inspira-se na história de Margaret Garner, uma mulher negra que fugiu à escravatura, em 1856, no estado do Kentucky — seria adaptado ao cinema em 1998, por Jonathan Demme, com Oprah Winfrey como produtora e intérprete principal (o filme não teve distribuição comercial nas salas portuguesas).
Já em 2019, o fotógrafo e cineasta Timothy Greenfield-Sanders apresentou no Festival de Sundance o seu documentário Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am. No mês de Fevereiro, Toni Morrison publicara The Source of Self-Regard, uma antologia de "ensaios, discursos e meditações".

Sexist language, racist language, theistic language – all are typical of the policing languages of mastery, and cannot, do not permit new knowledge or encourage the mutual exchange of ideas.
